Akai Gurley, a 28 years old man.
In 2014, Gurley and his girlfriend entered a pitch-dark and unlit stairwell on the 7th floor in NYC,
14 steps below them were two officers patrolling the stairwells.
Officer Peter Liang had his firearm drawn, and fired it. The shot bounced off a wall and fatally
struck Gurley in his chest.
The officer was conviced with manslaughter, which a court later reduced to criminally negligent homicide.
Liang was sentenced to 5 years of probation and 800 hours of community service.
